Hill Top Interior Inspiration

We visited Beatrix Potter's snug and sweetly decorated farmhouse Hill Top out of affection for childhood favourite characters Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck, but came away inspired by her creative and unusual interior touches, and the beauty of the Lake District landscapes.

Beatrix moved to Hill Top farm after her marriage to William Heelis. Her additions and decorations include hand-carved initials over the fireplace, an art-deco brass door knocker on the kitchen door, deep saturated colour from Persian rugs and a bold printed wallpaper climbing the walls and creating a floral canopy across the ceiling. 

Miniature bronze characters from her books nestle among the unique and personal ornaments displayed from her life here. The highlight, displayed on Beatrix's oxblood leather writing desk, is the letter containing the first mentions, and portraits, of Peter...
